Nothing like hanging out with the Gaffney family at Jessica and Jamal's wedding (Jess is one of Tony's three beautiful sisters). Tony is heading to Germany to play professionally with Telekom Baskets Bonn. Tony started last season in Turkey with Turk Telekom Ankara and then moved back to the States. He played in NBDL with Utah Flash averaging 10.3ppg, 6.8rpg and 2.3apg in 38 games. Best of luck Tony - the journey continues!

Gaffney Joins Utah Flash in NBA D-Leauge

The Utah Flash recently announced that they had waived forward Bennet Davis and guard Kevin Krueger due to injury. Davis suffered a stress fracture in his right leg and is expected to miss about two months of action. Krueger has a severely sprained ankle and he will be out at least two weeks. The Flash also announced today that they have signed forward Tony Gaffney. Gaffney had been playing in Turkey this season and spent time with the Boston Celtics last season. Flash head coach Kevin Young had this to say about Gaffney:

“Tony brings a high level of energy and athleticism which will be a welcomed shot in the arm to our team,” said Head Coach Kevin Young. “He is a tenacious rebounder and great defender. We look forward to helping him get back to the NBA.”

After Buyout in Turkey, Tony Joins NBADL's Utah Flash

After a buyout in Turkey, Tony has been able to return to the U.S. and is currently playing with the NBA D-League's Utah Flash. The Flash play today and tomorrow (1/10/11 and 1/11/11) at 2:45 p.m. eastern time. Both games will be televised on NBATV. Let's root Tony on during his trek back to the NBA. GO TONY!

Just heard from Tony's family that TGaff is off to Turkey to play some ball for Turkish Telekom. It's been a whirlwind for the former UMass star. Following college there have been several NBA workouts for various teams (see below), intense workouts down at IMG Academy (in Florida), signs with the Lakers, plays in Israel, breaks his ankle, back to the states, plenty of rehab, more workouts, signed by the Celtics and now flying once again overseas with a nice contract in hand. Its hard not to like this guy! The journey continues from the MAN from Berkley. Even the Celtic girls are still cheering for him!!

The Boston Celtics released Tony Gaffney yesterday. It simply came down to a numbers game for Gaffney as the Celtics signed Von Wafer to a one-year contract and resigned Marquis Daniels (along with the two O'Neals) the last few spots became that much tougher for Tony to crack.

Gaffney Starts to Increase Training Intensity

After a little more than five months away from basketball, Tony Gaffney is completely recovered from a foot injury. Light workouts have begun and the intensity of those workouts are expected to increase over the next few weeks. I recently spoke to Tony and his Dad and everyone is doing well and he is excited to get back into the swing of things.

Once again, Tony is drawing a great deal of interest from NBA teams (including the Celtics and Lakers) and is considering his options in terms of who to play with this summer. He is also looking to get back with his trainer down in Florida come June. At the present time it's all about getting back in shape for the rigors of NBA life. His main goals are to improve his upper body (size) and strength, work on his jumping and to continue to focus on his nutrition. Knowing Tony's unmatched work ethic - we all know that it is only a matter of time until he is back on "his journey to the NBA." Read the latest on Tony and the Celtics here. "Tony Gaffney, playing for the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Summer League, last night saw his most extensive action. The former Somerset High star played 28 minutes in a 92-77 loss to Houston, scoring six points (3-for-7 from the field), grabbing five rebounds, dishing two assists and making one steal and blocking one shot.

His minutes have been up and down in the four L.A. games thus far in Las Vegas. He played 23 minutes in the opener and followed with five minutes and then nine minutes before getting busy again last night. The 6-foot-8 Gaffney is averaging 3.8 points per game."

UMass forward Tony Gaffney's name was not called last night in the draft. He was expected to go somewhere between #40-60 of the 2nd round. Once I got over the shock of hearing Blake Griffin's brother's name called at #48 (ave. only 9 ppg and 5 reb) I definitely thought we would here Tony's name. I know that Tony already has had offers to play in Europe, so now we will wait to see what he decides. He and his family already know... that it's only a matter of time until his journey takes him to the NBA.

The Pacers found out last night that they will have the 13th pick in the draft on June 25 at Madison Square Garden in NY.

Looks like Tony had all pistons firing for this game, scoring 11 points on 5/8 shooting and pulling down 7 rebounds. Though Gaffney didn’t put up a terribly productive stat line today, he displayed some very interesting tools. Mostly known in college for his tremendous defensive presence and effort level, Gaffney wasn’t asked to do much scoring for UMass, making the most of the touches he earned coming from his hustle and ability to run the floor. While he has played well defensively in both of the games he’s played in, he showed some offensive promise that his collegiate role didn’t give him the opportunity to showcase. Looking beyond the box score, we came away intrigued with what we saw today. A very athletic forward with a slender frame, Gaffney exploited his excellent quickness on a couple of occasions today, beating his defender off the dribble on three memorable occasions. Not usually prone to putting the ball on the floor, his ability to get to the rim was quite impressive. Once in the lane, Gaffney used quick fakes to get his man off balance before spinning over his left shoulder for hook shots. Considering his length and quickness, it is safe to say that Gaffney has a lot of potential if he continues to diversify his offensive game. On the defensive end, Gaffney has shown great versatility, looking capable when defending the post and the perimeter. Though he will need to continue to add weight to his frame to be a better interior defender moving forward, he shows the timing, awareness, and effort level to be very effective in this setting.

It was back in November that word first leaked out that the NBA was ending the Orlando Pre-Draft Camp's three-year run in favor of a more NFL Scouting Combine format in Chicago. Commissioner David Stern's reason for moving away from the weeklong competition-heavy setup was hard to argue with: What was originally set up to be a showcase of the best talent had basically turned into a series of pickup games among mostly fringe NBA prospects. Last season's camp produced only two players (George Hill and J.R. Giddens) drafted in the first round, while 17 went in the second round.
